Hadspen centre at TCL awards

Our very own Stephen Smith became the Tasmanian Cricket League's 13th Hall of Fame inductee last night.

Cap. No 4 was an original Sidmouth XI member back in 1987-88 when the Chieftains were born.

This season in a one-off game he passed 8000 career club runs in his 37th summer.

As a right-hand top-order batsman and wicketkeeper, he is the Hadspen Cricket Club’s leading runscorer with five hundreds, 43 half centuries and a highest score of 159.

Across his 335 matches, he has averaged 27 with the bat, taken a club-record amount of catches and claimed the wicket of 87 very, very unlucky opposition batsmen.

He is a club champion and mentor to many - winning eight premierships and many best and fairest awards along his journey.

Affectionately known by many as The Chief, The Hobbit, Helmut Schumacher or simply Rexy to most, one of this year’s inductees has been a Chieftains captain, committee member, club person of the year in 2004 and was a

warded life membership in 2009.

His sense of fun and his cricket brain make him the perfect teammate, his dedication and loyalty to the HCC make him a great club man and his determination to win and fight make him one of the toughest opponents.

Congratulations mate, thoroughly deserved.

Rex is the third Chieftain to be inducted into the TCL Hall of Fame along with Grant Davern and John Bailey.

Well done to all other award winners on their fantastic seasons, particularly Jason Thomas who took out the C-grade MVP award and Tristan Weeks who finished second in the Jason Savage Medal count.

VENI, VIDI VICI
